The first essay I wrote in class was my literary analysis. In this paper I was to assess the book Heart of Darkness that we read throughout class. Throughout this paper I was to write about what happened in the book following my thesis statement. Also, in this paper I was to integrate quotes used in the book to validate my points in my thesis statement. The next paper I wrote was my advertisement analysis over the brands Clarisonic and Altchek MD. Throughout this paper I wrote a detailed description of both ads and how they were similar and different. Also, in this paper I discussed affective marketing techniques that both the brands, and magazines use to help sell their product. Following the ad analysis I wrote my favorite paper which was my personal narrative. In this paper I wrote about an event that happened in my life and how it taught me many lessons that I can carry on forever. In the narrative paper I told the story of how it happened and also used effective dialogue to help provide the story with detail.With each paper that I was assigned I had to think a little bit about what I what I was going to write and make valid points that helped provide my claim for each. Only a couple weeks in to this class and I see now how management is going to hep me, whether I want to be a business major or not. Managers are required to have many skills in order to be successful. These skills are not just beneficial for a manager, but for anyone else striving to find success. That is one of my goals in the course, to learn what skills are required and how to develop them. I also hope that taking this class gives me more perspective of what I want to do. Ever since I took an Anatomy and Physiology class in high school, I knew that I wanted to get a career in the medical field. The medical field is a very broad field with a huge variety of different occupations though, and when it comes to deciding on which branch Id like to go into or choosing an actual occupation to focus on, I struggle at making a decision. This is only my second year of college, but I have already changed my major three times. I have gone from nursing, to health education, to now, medical laboratory science. This field truly interests me. After doing some research, I found  that earning a degree in medical laboratory science, or clinical laboratory science, opens the door to a wide variety of career opportunities. One of these opportunities being a Medical Laboratory Manager. Before looking into this program, I had never really imagined myself as a manager, as I mentioned. I have always seen myself as one who would be working under someone else. But now as I am getting more experience and really thinking about my future more, I am realizing that I would not like to work under someone my whole life. What I expect to learn in this class is to find out whether or not managing is for sure something I really want to do. My goal is to develop all the skills necessary to be a good manager. I expect to learn better ethics, how to work with people from different backgrounds, and sharpen my critical thinking skills, because these skills are going to benefit me my whole life in whatever job I choose to do, be it managing or not. Throughout the story, however, old traditions are secretly brought back, further reconstructing this world in order for it to last. In Chapters 23-26, we start to see how the roles of men and women are continuing to be reconstructed, as rules are broken between Serena, Offred, Nick and the Commander.In Gillead, handmaids are brought to each household where a woman is incapable of conceiving a child. The family goes through a ritual where bible passages are read, and the handmaid has relations with the man of the house while the wife stands behind her, holding her hands as a symbol of unity. Relations between the husband and the handmaid are impersonal and intended only for procreation, as passion has become a thing of the past.Offred, however, has not yet become pregnant through out these rituals, and something must be done to move the process along. In Chapter 23 we read about Offred’s secret meetings with the commander in his study, where they talk, read books and magazines, and play scrabble (something forbidden as women are outlawed from reading). Things between the Commander and Offred start to get more impersonal as the Commander asks Offred to â€Å"Kiss him like she means it† at the end of one of their meetings.This brings us to Offred and the Commander’s first indication of reconstruction in bringing about familiarity toward their â€Å"business-like† relationship. Each month, the handmaids are to go to the doctors for health examinations to make sure that they are prepared if they were to get pregnant. During one such visit, the doctor comments to Offred that the Commander may be inadequate for consummating. While against the rules, the doctor offers to have relations with Offred and cast the baby off to Serena and the Commander.Offred refuses as this seems to be yet another small example of reconstruction in bending of the rules in order to bring about expected results. We find out that Offred is not the only person that the doctor has offered service to. We also see this as the commander introduces Offred to his friend Nick. Offred also starts meeting with Nick and connecting with him. Serena, the Commander’s wife, also realizes that the Commander could be at fault for the inability to become pregnant. Serena suggests that Offred tries Nick and to pass the baby off.Offred’s relationships with each of these men start to resemble more of a courting relationship, as more secrets are kept about the meetings themselves and what goes on. Offred’s relationship with Serena is also risky as any false move can put her into trouble with government. While there are many examples of reconstruction throughout the story â€Å"A Handmaids Tale†, the roles of men and women and how the y change throughout the book seem to be the most apparent. As a result, it shows us how an overly controlled world only leads to destruction in the end.

The reason for this is that they can hold back valuable information due to fear of shame because of judgment leading to depression and stress (Gamble and Creedy, 2007). One of the long-term effects of childbirth experience is posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The disorder could be because of previous occurrences such as sexual abuse like rape or the birth itself (Kendall-Tackett, 2017). The symptoms of PTSD include difficulty in sleeping, poor concentration, and lack of interest in meaningful activities. The risk factors for PTSD include infant complications, current depressions, and history of trauma. Among the at-risk groups are single parents, and women from the minority racial groups (Kendall-Tackett, 2017). According to statistics, PTSD affects more women than men since nearly twice the number of women report PTSD. Former Cop Daniel Holtzclaw Sentenced to 263 Years In January 2016, former Oklahoma City police officer Daniel Holtzclaw was sentenced to 263 years in prison for the rape and sexual assault of 13 black women in 2013 and 2014. State prosecutors argued that Holtzclaw should serve his sentence consecutively, making the case that each survivor deserved to have justice for the individual crimes. Holtzclaw made a career of assaulting Black women motorists during traffic stops and other instances and then scared them many of them into silence. His victims- many of whom were poor and had prior records- were too afraid to come forward. A jury found Holtzclaw guilty on 18 out of 36 criminal charges, including three counts of procuring lewd exhibition, four counts of forcible oral sodomy, five counts of first and second-degree rape, and six counts of sexual battery in December 2015. The jury recommended that Holtzclaw serve 263 years in prison. Three of Holtzclaw’s victims delivered impact statements at the January 2016 sentencing hearing- including his youngest victim who was just 17 years old at the time of her assault. She told the court about the great damage she experienced, revealing the her life â€Å"has been upside down.† How Hotlzclaw Chose His Victims At least thirteen women came forward to accuse Holtzclaw of sexual assault. Many of the women had not reported the assault for fear of reprisals or fear-later confirmed by the jurys failure to find Holtzclaw guilty on all 36 of the criminal charges brought against him-that they would not be believed. At a preliminary hearing in the case, the 17-year old survivor explained her reasoning, â€Å"Who are they going to believe? It’s my word against his. He’s a police officer.† This notion of â€Å"he said, she said† is a fairly common argument used to discount sexual assault survivors. And when the accused is a person in a position of power, such as a police officer, it can be even harder for survivors to get due process. It was this very circumstance that Daniel Holtzclaw was counting on. He picked out very specific targets: women who were poor, Black, and who, in several cases, had run-ins with the police because of drugs and sex work. Because of their backgrounds these women would not make credible witnesses against him. He could act with impunity and never have to face any consequences because his victims were already considered guilty in the eyes of the law and society. A similar case happened in Baltimore, where poor Black women were targets of sexual assault: â€Å"20 women who filed a lawsuit against the Housing Authority of Baltimore City are splitting a settlement worth almost $8 million. The lawsuit alleged that maintenance workers at various housing complexes had demanded sexual favors from the women in exchange for receiving badly needed repairs on their units.† Again, these maintenance workers, not unlike Daniel Hotlzclaw, banked on these women being both desperate and untrustworthy.   They believed that they could rape women and not be held accountable. Daniel Hotlzclaw was disabused of this power when he pulled over the wrong the woman, however.   Jannie Ligons, a 57-year-old grandmother, also survived an encounter with Holtzclaw. She was the first woman to come forward. Unlike many of the other victims, she had a support system: she was supported by her daughters and her community. She helped lead the charge that prompted 12 other victims to come forward and speak truth to power. Whats Next? Holtzclaw’s attorney said he plans to appeal. However, the judge has previously denied Holtzclaws request for a new trial or an evidentiary hearing. Holtzclaw is currently in jail serving his 263-year sentence. Convictions for police in sexual assault cases are rare and hefty sentences are even rarer. Nevertheless, sexual misconduct within the police force is fairly common.
